Church History
Deliverance Church – Kenya is a Pentecostal Charismatic Ministry that was founded to address the need of the followers of Christ who embraced the world-wide charismatic movement of the early seventies and is Apostolic in nature.
Deliverance Church – Eldoret was founded in 1988 as a vision of God through His servant Bishop Dr. George Gichana. Since inception the ministry has grown as a local church from less than 50 to over 1,500 attendants presently. It has also grown in terms of planting over 80 churches all across Western Kenya and North Rift region.
Deliverance Church draws its purpose and mission from Luke 4:18-19.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Late 1969 and early 1970 God moved powerfully and many young people in Colleges and institutions of higher learning came to Christ. Hungry for things of God many found fresh water to drink in rallies, camps, crusades and small prayer groups. God used one Apostle Dr. Joe Kayo to spearhead the move. This happened both in Kenya and Uganda.
For years my heart yearned and desired to reach the Rift Valley Region. The opportunity presented itself in November 1988 to launch the Church in Eldoret. We launched the ministry with gospel films, rallies, crusades, seminars, holiday camps and small group prayer meetings. The church begun meeting at Eldoret Town hall on Sunday afternoons. Later we got an opportunity to hold our services in an old cinema hall – Mosop Hall, where God graciously blessed and multiplied our efforts.
While in Mosop Hall we would occasionally hold meetings in the stadium. In 1996 we acquired a three acre plot on which the present sanctuary and other facilities stand. While constructing the sanctuary we held services under trees and in tents.
With the wide open doors for evangelism and church planting, we worked with gospel musicians, evangelists and teachers of the word. Local musicians like Faustine Munishi, John Deus, Abednego Mwanjala and Douglas Jiveti featured prominently among others. God gave us favour with His choice servants including Egon Falk, Don Double, Peter Pretorious and Reinhardt Bonkee. We recognize the role and participation of Bishop Dr. Mark Kariuki, Bishop Paul Ochieng, Bishop Ben
Kipruto, Evangelist Peter Franz in church planting. Our friends from overseas including Alan Vincent, Jaap Dielemaan, and Johnny Dyer among others gave us courage and hope. Our brothers Laban Jjumba, Titus Oundo and Dan Naya from Uganda have been a great blessing to us.
Leaders, Pastors and ministry supporters have been raised. Many churches in the North Rift Region, Western Kenya, and Nyanza have been planted. God has favoured us to own land and buildings. Today we have a Sanctuary, a nursery and primary school, clinic, and vehicles for ministry.
We are both on Radio and Television where we reach thousands weekly. Our ministry trips have taken us to Europe, U.S.A, Australia, Asia and many African countries.
We face the future with hope and determination that God will use us strategically in Church planting, leadership development, building the saints, doing evangelism and remaining relevant to the times with the unchanging gospel of Christ. God bless His church, people and the work of their hands. May we rise to the next level.
